WASD saves $300 million using new technology

Innovative and forward-thinking engineering approach provides significant cost savings for Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD), which benefits customers, County residents, and the environment.

A pilot program found that newer, less expensive filtration technology would comply with all Ocean Outfall Legislation Program (OOL) regulations while providing substantial savings at two of WASD’s wastewater treatment plants.

In addition, replacing low-speed generators with high-speed certified generators at the South District Wastewater Treatment Plant, WASD could increase reliability and reduce emissions while saving on energy costs. Cooperative purchase of the new generators lowers the price of the equipment by combining the purchasing power of utilities across the country.
