MIAMI, FL – Following the democratic impeachment of socialist President Pedro Castillo for attempting to dissolve the Congress of the Republic of Perú, a large group of American tourists, including several Floridians and residents of Miami-Dade County, have been stranded in-country as violent, anti-democratic forces fan the flames of social unrest in Perú.
Today, Congressman Carlos Giménez (FL-26) sent a letter to the U.S. Department of State officials handling this case to call for the U.S. Department of State to provide information on the situation unfolding and guarantee the safety of U.S. citizens currently stranded in the Republic of Perú.
The office of Congressman Giménez has also contacted the U.S. Embassy in Perú.
Congressman Giménez looks forward to an immediate response and keeping an open line of communication with both the U.S. Embassy and the Department of State.

I am writing to you deeply concerned about the situation of hundreds of American citizens that are currently stranded in the Republic of Perú and are unable to return home to the United States.
Following the democratic impeachment of socialist President Pedro Castillo for attempting to dissolve the Congress of the Republic of Perú, a large group of American tourists, including several Floridians and residents of Miami-Dade County, have been stranded in-country as violent, anti-democratic forces fan the flames of social unrest in Perú. These U.S. citizens include brave first-responders who are members of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department and Miami-Dade Police Department.
The historic City of Machu Pichu, which attracts thousands of American tourists each year, is isolated from the Capital City of Lima and has been the site of the latest political destabilization efforts leaving American citizens unable to reach Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) and safely return home.
I represent Miami-Dade County, the Gateway to the Americas, and my constituents must be informed of what exactly the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Embassy in Perú are doing to bring these stranded American citizens back home quickly, safely, and securely.
The Department of State must provide these U.S. citizens in Perú with the resources that they need to safely return home. It is one of the Department of State’s most basic, fundamental functions and the United States of America has an obligation to protect the integrity of our U.S. citizens when traveling abroad.
I look forward to obtaining an immediate response and maintaining an open line of communication with our Department of State officials who are handling this case.
