Congressman Gimenez Meets with USCG On Migrant Crisis in The Florida Keys

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Carlos Gimenez (FL-28) met with the U.S. Coast Guard and representatives from Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and Homeland Security Investigations on the migrant crisis impacting the Florida Keys.

Since August 2022, nearly 10,000 people have been encountered in the waters off the coast of Florida.

Congressman Gimenez called on the Biden Administration to reimburse local communities and the state for the resources that have been expended to care for this latest wave of migrants.

Congressman Gimenez thanked Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for activating the National Guard and taking bold action. On Friday, January 6th Governor Ron DeSantis signed an Executive Order activating the Florida National Guard, directing state law enforcement agencies and other state agencies to provide resources in support of local governments responding to the alarming influx of migrants landing in the Florida Keys, and providing additional support toward efforts to prevent further migrant landings on Florida’s shores.

Congressman Gimenez represents Florida’s 28th Congressional District based in Miami-Dade County and includes the Florida Keys. He is a career firefighter and the former Mayor of Miami-Dade County. He is currently the only Cuban-born Member of Congress, having fled the island with his family shortly after the Communist takeover.
